Open Government and Open Records

Graves Dougherty lawyers are deeply involved in the development and application of Texas' open meetings and public information laws, assisting media and private clients in making and enforcing requests for government information and in insisting on access to government meetings. This has been a staple of Graves Dougherty's media practice since Texas adopted its open meetings and open records laws, and the firm's attorneys have been involved in precedent-making open government litigation, including:

In re Nolo Press, 991 S.W.2d 768 (Tex. 1999), an original action before Texas Supreme Court for self-help law publisher resulting in opening to public scrutiny of rules and membership of Texas Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee.

Cox Enterprises, Inc. v. Board of Trustees of Austin ISD, 706 S.W.2d 956 (Tex. 1986), which set important standards for interpretation of the Texas Open Meetings Act.

Hubert v. Harte-Hanks Newspapers, Inc., 652 S.W.2d 546 (Tex. App. – Austin 1983, no writ), which required public disclosure of names and qualifications of candidates for Texas A&M president.

Graves Dougherty lawyers also assist companies and individuals who do business with the government to protect their trade secrets and proprietary information from unwarranted and harmful disclosure to competitors and the public.
